We help businesses get clear about what they need from their roles and their people.
People create value through their work. A clear role connects that work with what the business needs, and makes ownership and support explicit.
What guides the work: value before activity; evidence before attractive claims; ownership alongside authority and support; plain language everyone can use.
Dr Jay McLean | Registered Organisational Psychologist, Founder, Role Blueprint
Jay is a registered organisational psychologist with 30 years’ experience helping New Zealand organisations make work better for people and businesses.
Across his career, he’s seen how often roles are defined by lists of tasks rather than the contribution a business actually needs.
He created Role Blueprint to change that — giving businesses a practical, affordable way to clarify why a role exists, what it needs to achieve, and what must be in place for someone to succeed.
His work draws on extensive organisational experience and PhD research into psychological eustress — understanding what helps people find meaning, direct their effort and contribute effectively at work.
Meet the founder

Dr Jay McLean
Registered Organisational Psychologist | Founder, Role Blueprint
I help businesses get clear about the work they need done—and find, develop and support the people who will do it well.
I bring 30 years’ experience across New Zealand’s public, private and charitable sectors, including emergency services, local government and volunteer-led organisations. My work connects psychological insight with the practical decisions that help businesses and their people succeed.
Role Blueprint brings that experience into clear role expectations, sound hiring decisions and a purposeful start for the person joining. Through HR Blueprint, I also support businesses across the full range of HR, with a particular focus on organisational development, employee engagement and wellbeing.
My PhD research explored eustress—the positive side of stress—and I’m the author of Unlocking Eustress. That interest runs through my practice: helping people contribute, grow and thrive at work.
My approach is curious, direct and collaborative. I work with you to understand what’s needed and turn it into something practical for your business.
